Archbold Biological Station seeks a bright, motivated Data Manager/Analyst to join our team. Archbold Biological Station is a non-profit ecological organization, committed to conservation and collaborative research. As a Data Manager/Analyst, you will be responsible for overseeing the management of data generated by Archbold's ecological research projects. You will work closely with researchers and other staff to ensure that data is collected, stored, and organized accurately and efficiently. An ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and interested in developing automated data workflows. The scope/role may change slightly based on the skills and experience of the candidate. The desired start date is in October or November.  Posting will remain open until 10/7/24, applications will be reviewed as they are received. 


Essential Roles & Responsibilities
 

  • Data Organization & Management: Lead and manage new data tasks or projects efficiently. 
  • Protocol Development: Devise, document, and implement secure and efficient protocols for data organization. 
  • Data Flow Monitoring: Oversee and troubleshoot data streams from various sources (weather towers, buoys, camera traps, etc.) to servers. 
  • Automation & Upkeep: Automate data input, monitoring, and maintenance of Archbold's data management software, WISKI. 
  • Quality Assurance: Develop techniques for data collection and quality checks to ensure accuracy and adequacy. 
  • Data Sharing: Establish rules and procedures for data sharing with staff and external collaborators. 
  • Communication: Effectively communicate best practices for scientific data management. 
  • Support Research Staff: Assist research staff with daily use of Archbold data systems, including report generation and data extraction/formatting. 
  • Database Design: Design and implement relational databases across various software systems. 
  • GIS & IT Support: Provide basic GIS, IT, and web task support as needed. 
Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biology, relevant field, or suitable coursework 
  • Excellent understanding of data management functions (planning, collection, quality control, storage, analysis, and distribution) 
  • Proficiency in coding languages (R, Python, etc.) 
  • Understanding of SQL and NoSQL based platforms and languages, such as: 
    • SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB 
    • TSQL, PSQL 
    • BSON, XML, JSON 
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT tools and processes 
  • Familiarity or coursework with modern relational databases and information system technologies 
  • Analytical mindset with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently 
  • Ability to independently research and master new software 
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Access, Word etc) 
Preferred Qualifications 

  • Passion for Archbold's mission, with interest or experience in biological research and conservation. 
  • Knowledge of HTML, VBA. 
  • Familiarity with Windows Command Line and Shell Scripting (PowerShell, Bash). 
  • Working knowledge of Linux-based operating systems or WSL. 
  • Familiar with Big Data concepts. 
  • An understanding of data modeling concepts. 
  • Experience with MS Access database creation and maintenance, including form design. 
  • Familiarity with ESRI Suite (ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, FieldMaps). 
  • Understanding of scientific disciplines and procedures, including research life cycles and FAIR principles of data sharing.
  • Precision and attention to detail in task execution. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot network data flow connections. 
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary research staff and external agencies. 
  • Excellent communication skills. 

This is a full-time position with benefits. Preference will be given to candidates who are willing to work on-site, but we are open to discussing hybrid work arrangements with qualified candidates.
